Singapore General Election 2006
Singapore General Election 2006 had just ended 5 days ago, with PAP emerging as the winner again after a fierce battle with Opposition Parties which last for 9 days. I am not a fan of political things but due to job commitment, i am involved in the whole process.
I was attached to the mircowave team which job is to help and relay the signal capture from the camera and send it back to HQ. Then from HQ, they will try to take out useful scenes for news. There were a total of 4 teams to be dispatched to different locations that had rallies going on. I had respectively covered area in Yishun, Serangoon Stadium, Jalan Tenteram, Ubi and lastly Hougang Ave 5 which had rallies by both PAP and Workers' Party.
Workers' Party is actually more interesting because they raised and talked about sensitive topics which during our daily life we complain about but don't dare to really voice out. So when WP actually raised all these topics, it actually makes the long supressed anger in the country men to surface. Maybe, I say maybe thats the reason why Opposition Parties get higher vote percentage as compare to the last election. PAP on the other side talked more about what they had did in the past to help the residents, talk about upgrading and the ever going Gomez incident.
Anyway, i took some photos of the rallies, especially the last rally at Serangoon Stadium where the WP hold their last rally before election. It is the most interesting one because it had so many people there. I think at least 10k. Many were stuck outside and heard were quite unhappy about been stop from going in due to the stadium was already full. Some of the supporters even sabotage on our equipment. They actually go and turn off our power suppy to the equipment which resulted in signal lost to HQ. This caused some panic in us because at that time our walkie-talkie actually breakdown and the HP network was jammed (cannot call out but call can come in).Haha...I was at that time infront of the stage with camera men and the equipment was with my other collegues who was looking after it at the grand stand. So imagine i had to run all the way there to find out what happened and to find out that my collegue had dismantle all the connection because he thought that i wanted to pack up the stuff but due to the crowdiness i can't go up the grand stand, i had switched off the generator which is the source of the power. Then my supervisor at the HQ called and request me to connect all back because he thought that the cameramen still want to continue filming which is not the case...Haha..
On the last day which is the election night, we were at Hougang Ave 5 Block 322 coffeeshop. We were there to interview the residents before and after the result was out. Diana Ser and Peral Frost (Don't know if i get her name right) was there also to interview. Haha. A very good experience because it is not always you get to see what happened behind the scene before things are shown on TV. A big plus also when the 2 hosts are pretty. Haha. Got the chance to have a light chat with them when we are free. Things went quite smoothly at first but towards the end, things start to happen. A bunch of uncles who are WP supporters went quite rowdy after alot of beer (They start drinking at 3 plus in the noon till 1am). Everytime the camera pointed towards them, they will shout slogans and cheers to support the WP. But as we were trying to take a last Live scene and trying to get a quieter background, we shifted the camera to the side of the coffeeshop to do the filming. A few from the bunch of already drunk uncles saw that and were quite unhappy that we had deserted them. Thus, they actually surrounded the cameramen and the camera to confront him about the shifting of camera. After some persuading and not able to get them to leave us alone to finish up our work, we pack up. Mind you, it is about 1am at that time. We are all tired man. Can't they just cheer less abit to let us finish up our work?..Sigh
